GB To "Hold Their Ground" For One Last CB’s Matinee

I’m not sure if anyone else has heard about this but Rocks Off, the official promotor of the last shows at CBGB’s, has on their website, www.rocksoff.com, that the infamous, reunited kings of NYHC are going to be gracing that all-too-frail stage one last time. The show takes place on Sunday 9/4, the afternoon after their very sold-out show at BB King’s. No info yet on when tickets go on sale but rock off’s site has it listed at “$9.99.”

And I’m totally jeeving this off Pitchfork,www.pitchforkmedia.com but apparently…

“Man Man is for the children! On August 28, Man Man’s video for “Engwish Bwudd”, from their Ace Fu release Six Demon Bag, will be broadcast on Nicktoons sometime between 10 p.m. and 1 a.m. as part of their “Nicktoons Shorts Festival”.”

That is the best thing ever. Seriously.

These Bands Could Be Your Life

So lately I’ve had the pleasure of grabbing a few albums before they’re due for release. Listening to them for the past couple of days has actually given me a more optimisic view of the (near) future of music.

Since Matt’s gotten started on the hardcore genre of music, let me start out by introducing the incredibly powerful ENVY. The Japanese quartet are set to release their 3rd studio album (their first release on Temporary Residence!) in September. Capable of creating beauty in even their most brutal songs, Envy are truly way ahead of most bands that consider themselves “hardcore”. Actually, let me take that back because I doubt Envy would even consider themselves hardcore, let alone consider any of those bands their peers. You can catch them on tour this summer with such acts as Sleeping People and Russian Circles. We’ll get back to that in a bit. The opening track, “Further Ahead of Warp” is one of the most epic 7 minutes ever recorded. Think Mogwai meets the cookie monster meets Japanese poetry.

Another Temporary Residence release coming up is the new Eluvium record, “When I Live By The Garden And The Sea”, which is already one of my favorite records of the year. I couldn’t find the album art for this one, so I’m just putting up a picture of sole Eluvium member, Matthew Cooper standing by the sea…possibly in front of a garden. ANYWAYS, don’t let the sweater confuse you, Matthew isn’t some singer/songwriter playing shitty songs about how much he misses his girlfriend or something; he’s the real deal. Matt chooses to focus his talents on creating ambient soundscapes that are built upon swirling keyboards, computer (EDIT: According to TRL label head, Jeremy Devine, Cooper dosen’t even know how to use a computer), and whatever else he’s using to create these beautiful tracks. I haven’t caught him live yet, but I’m definitely going to try and be front and center when he plays the Temporary Residence Limited 10 year Anniversary party at Bowery Ballroom with Envy and others this September. For more info on that, check out the Temporary Residence site.

So here’s where the connection game ends. Temporary Residence head, Jeremy Devine, grew up in Louisville, Kentucky…well, so did our last artist, David Pajo. You may know Pajo already from his early outfit, the “highly influential, bla bla bla” Slint (who I managed to catch live on their brief reunion tour and were fucking AMAZING), or you may have seen him in one of the other trillion bands he’s been in since (Tortoise, Zwan, Papa M, etc), but recently Pajo’s just been releasing music under…Pajo. Last year’s self titled CD was pretty good considering he had recorded the whole thing on his laptop using just his guitar, a drum machine, and whatever else he had lying around at the time, but I happen to like this album a lot more. Anyways, Pajo’s back with his new album “1968″ that’s being released on Drag City in the near future. This record finds Pajo sounding more like an actual BAND, and he even decides to strap on an electric again. A lot of songs on this one remind me of the Byrds or other 60’s California bands (my favorite track has to be “We Get Along, Mostly” which has a sweet guitar line). I read in some interview that he consider Neil Young to be one of his favorite artists…well, so do I, and on this record I think he even tries to blow the harmonica like old Neil, and if harmonica’s can’t turn you onto a record, then you need to get out of my face. You can catch Pajo on tour too and he’ll be playing the Knitting Factory on August 4th.

So there you go, 3 records that I’m really into right now. Hopefully people go out and buy these CD’s instead of wasting their money on that new Muse album or something. Oh wait, that’s not gonna happen.

Interview With Kevin Baker Of The Hope Conspiracy

I sat down with Kevin Baker of Boston’s long-heralded hardcore outfit The Hope Conspiracy last month before a show at the Knitting Factory. The Hope Con leader and I had a good, near-hour long convo about his band’s move from Equal Vision Records to Deathwish, their much-anticipated new full-length (due this fall), and his views on all the young (somewhat clueless)kiddies in the scene. It’s funny too because most of the things we talked about during the interview (essentially, how we hate meathead ape-like dudes causing trouble at shows) ended up happening that night. Well, we called it I guess. Here’s a little excerpt from the interview. Enjoy.

Being around the scene for awhile, does it bother you when you see kids who ignore or have a different understanding of what punk or hardcore means to you?
Everything is a cookie cutter, carbon copy, look, pose or embellishment of something that’s already been done. I can look at five bands right that are really popular right now and I can go. “Ok, they are copying this band. They are copying that band” but they are all doing it half-assed and it sucks. But they all have a video and they all have a ton of money put into them and they are all sound scanning ridiculous numbers. They are immediately on this fest, that fest or this fucking crazy tour, that crazy tour. The whole ethic of it, to me right now, is absolutely fucking destroyed. There are only a handful of bands out there, that I know of, and that I don’t know of that are flying under my radar that are still doing it for the right reasons. Those are only the types of bands I can give two shits about. I put on the radio, I don’t even listen to the radio really, but every now again I’ll put it on and it sounds mechanical and processed. It ain’t my thing. And I’m also, mind you, not a 15 year old girl or an 18 year old kid. It’s all a way to sell a shirt and sell a fucking CD and sell an image and ultimately sell a fucking ticket to a show. Which, I know is, what the music business is. But that’s not what punk is and that’s not what hardcore is.

Interview With Pete From The Bouncing Souls

On the first day of this years Warped Tour, I was able to sit down and speak with a member from one of my favorite bands, Pete from The Bouncing Souls. We talked about their new record, The Gold Record, their six night record release party, and he enlightened on the meaning of “Picken Chiken Style”.

Elona: This is the first day of the 2006 Warped Tour. How many years have you guys played ?

Pete:Um, for the whole thing I think this is our fourth time. We’ve played bits and pieces of some of the tours too so if you include those it’s our sixth. We’ve been a big part of it.

E:Oh ok, well since you’ve played Warped Tour for so long, what are some of the best and worst things about the tour?
P: There are so many good bands to see everyday, that’s always great. The only bad part is sunburn and long days and stuff like that.
