The Pogues | Roseland Ballroom, NYC | 3/15/07

“Sorry about last night, guys. Shit happens.”

Guitarist Phil Chevron opened Thursday night’s Pogues show with that simple explanation for the “little tumble” lead singer Shane MacGowan took a few nights before at the Boston show, resulting in him tearing ligaments in one of his knees and forcing the band to cancel Wednesday night’s show, last-minute. With that, all was forgiven, at least for me. After switching my tickets to the Thursday show, and waiting on the phone with Ticketmaster for too-long of a time, I was just happy to be there.

And so was the band. They played an instrumental song first, hyping the crowd for the arrival of Shane, who was wheeled out soon after in his wheelchair, and placed next to his table (and bottle of booze) and lowered microphone. He laughed through his teeth and greeted the crowd and the band kicked into “Streams of Whiskey.”

The Good, The Bad, and The Queen | In store-Apple, Soho | 3/12/07

On Monday I skipped three classes so I could wait in line for 3 hours to see a free 25 minutes in store performance by British supergroup The Good, The Bad, and The Queen at the Apple store in SOHO. The band seemed too good to be true consisting of former members of The Clash, Blur, Fela Kuti, and The Verve.

For some reason it seemed like a good idea not to wear a heavy coat on a winter day so I shivered outside while old eccentrics with funny haircuts walked past asking random people standing in line what they were standing in line for. Some of the polite people responded but soon got tired of saying the band’s lengthy name and eventually muttered “concert” just to get people to continue walking down the street.
