Break Ups: The Explosion

The sad breakup of Brooklyn/Boston-based band The Explosion was reported earlier today by Punknews. The group has had label troubles since departing from Virgin back in February of this year. Details of their new album’s release are still up in the air, however, the band will be playing some farewell shows in the upcoming months. They definitely were one of the better punk-rock bands to emerge in the past couple of years.

Daniel Johnston Playing Bowie’s Festival

The legendary and sometimes insane singer-songwriter Daniel Johnston will be making his way to the east coast this spring. He is playing two New York City area shows in May, one of them being the David Bowie curated High Line Festival on May 16th. Daniel will also be stopping by the Warsaw in Brooklyn on May 15th. Tickets for both shows are on sale now. For the full list of tour dates, click here.

The David Bowie curated High Line Festival takes place May 9 to 19. The ten day festival is a mix of music, comedy, film, and art from some of Bowie’s favorite artists. The festival which is in it’s inaugural year will be curated by a different artist each year.

Jesus and Mary Chain Tour and News Update

According to Brooklyn Vegan, tickets for the recently reunited Jesus and Mary Chain two night stand at Webster Hall go on sale today!
I’ll be sure to be there for at least one of those days on top of seeing them at Coachella (a report to follow once I get back).

While we’re on the subject of the Reids, here’s a recap of what’s been going on with them recently:

- Chemikal Underground Records recently released Sister Vanilla’s album featuring William and Jim Reid helping out their sister, Linda Reid. It’s a pretty sweet record and will definitely please any JAMC fan, so check it out.

Hot Water Music’s "Forever And Counting" Getting Reissued

According to the good folks over at Punknews.org, No Idea Records will be re-issuing Hot Water Music’s great record Forever And Counting on vinyl this year. No Idea recently re-issued (once again on vinyl) No Division by the late great HWM, so all you vinyl junkies can get your fix finally.

This was one of the first Hot Water Music albums I got and it’s still a good one. The bass lines, the lyrics, the guitars, all of it just works. How can it not? How can any Hot Water Music album not work? Well, granted there’s the marked difference between this and say, The New What Next, but since there’s a few years between the two, you gottan give them a bit of a break. No information yet on an exact date of release from No Idea, but will definitely be sometime this year.

My big question though? Where’s that Hot Water Music greatest hits compilation promised by No Idea, Till The Wheels Fall Off? Hmm, No Idea?

Aww, I still love you guys though.

The New Pornographers’ Upcoming Album to be Entitled "Challengers"

The upcoming New Pornographers album, entitled “Challengers,” will be released worldwide (with the exception of Canada) on Matador Records. The album will feature cover art from band member Neko Case. The artwork above is not the final design, but will be available for purchase on a screenprint poster at their concerts. Those of you who are lucky enough to be attending Coachella will have the first opportunity to pick up the snazzy poster, which will have an individualized code that guarantees you a copy of “Challengers” on its release date.

The NPs are still in the process of mixing the album, but have some upcoming shows to hold you over until its release. Neko Case has solo tour dates, so I’m unsure as to whether she’ll be performing with the band. I suggest taking any chance you have to see them live. Their energetic powerpop rock will have you dancing the entire time.
