The Berg Sans Nipple | Pianos, NYC | 05/27/07

The Berg Sans Nipple filled Pianos with their mesmerizing electropop last Sunday night. The stage was packed with various instruments, machines and cables, which would lead you to believe that there would be others joining band members Lori Sean Berg and Shane Aspegren on stage. From the first song, it was clear that appearances were not what they seemed. If there’s one thing The Berg Sans Nipple excels at, it’s multitasking. Throughout their set, both members diligently hopped from one machine and instrument to another.

Whether it was one drumstick to hit the drums and a maraca to hit the cymbals, or one hand on a synth and the other playing trumpet, there was rarely a moment where either of them was only playing one instrument.

Their set was a mixture of loops, drums, bells, keys, melodica, horns, pedals, and other percussion. Sometimes delicate, sometimes tribal, their hypnotic beats pulsated throughout the room. Barely-there vocals served as a mumbling reassurance to let go of your inhibitions. The highlight of the show was “Mystic Song,” which gave me such a feeling of elation that my head became a balloon slowly floating away. This was enhanced by how jolly they seemed to be performing; exchanging smiles, nods, and small waves with the crowd. Their demeanor was contagious, as the audience was a mass of contemplative, smiling faces, head bobbing, and swaying bodies. The Berg Sans Nipple’s short, but sweet set left me feeling giddy.

My camera is horrendous, but luckily, The Berg Sans Nipple is not, so these clips from the show are still cool.
This trumpet line was stuck in my head all night:
