Pop Band For Us Rejects
When news of Rage Against the Machine reuniting at Coachella surfaced, there were hordes of blogs and music mags teeming with adoration. Now its my turn for a little shameless worship. Silverchair may not have been a band that incited political revolution but their messages about rejecting social norms were just as powerful to the young ears of awkward teens. Next week, American fans can get reacquainted with this Australian band at clubs across the country as they embark on a U.S. Tour to support their newest CD Young Modern(Eleven).
I first came across Silverchair when I was in middle school. I watched a lot of MTV back in those days because I thought that was the only means of discovering new music and one day on Total Request Live, Carson Daly introduced the premiere of the video for “Ana’s Song” by Silverchair. After that first viewing I was never the same. I had never seen a video that poignant before nor had I heard a song about something as serious as an eating disorder. I set out to learn more about the band and found a catalog filled with songs about animal rights, anti drug use, rejection of gender roles, and just plain angsty tunes about being a teenager. Amongst the songs that I came in contact with were punk covers of Minor Threat and Black Flag songs which ultimately led me to a genre that I’ve been hooked on ever since.
Due to frontman Daniel Johns’ arthritis, I’ve never had the chance to see them play live until now. If you’re planning on going to any of these shows I suggest getting tickets quickly because their NYC dates earlier this year sold out pretty quickly. (click read more for dates)
