Brooklyn band Hysterics have a new music video for their song “Mostly Untitled.” Ah, I can still feel the fresh sting of rejection. Poor robot. ::sad emoticon::

Taco Bell Likes Touring Bands

Are you in a band that is on the road constantly, playing your heart out night after night? Do you like to eat? Do you find yourself scrapped for food money because your post-rock experimental, jazz-funk techno side project just isn’t bringing in enough money? The fine folks at Taco Bell may have the solution you’ve been looking for. The faux-Mexican food chain is asking for you to submit information about your band and fall tour schedule, in exchange for being entered to win a $500 gift card, good at any Taco Bell location. All band members must be 18 years old and you must be a rock band. Think you qualify for this odd, but strangely awesome promotion? More info, along with the submission form can be found here.

In Memory of Hilly Kristal (1931-2007)

The great Hilly Kristal, the man who first let the Ramones and Talking Heads play at CBGB’s all those years ago thus, and making history, died yesterday from complications stemming from his battle with lung cancer. Music in general has lost a great man today.

A private memorial service will be held soon, with a public one to be announced later on. Booking collective NYC Punk is stating that vigils are being held in front of CBGB’s and encourage mourners to come with flowers. Contributions in Kristal’s name can be made to his foundation, The Hilly Kristal Foundation For Musicians And Artists (168 Second Avenue, PMB 207, New York, NY 10003) or to the American Cancer Society.

Late Night Wallflower’s thoughts and prayers go out to his surviving relatives.

Ghostland Observatory, Spank Rock, Flosstradamus & Kid Sister, The Cool Kids, Yacht | McCarren Pool, Brooklyn, NY | 8/19/07

Sadly, this was the last Jelly NYC pool party of the year, but you can relive the magic of such artists like Man Man, Superchunk, Ted Leo, Dan Deacon and oh so many more by clicking here. This weeks show featured Ghostland Observatory blowing minds with their Rapture-esque dance music, while the Rub DJ’s held down the ones and two while spinning for the Cool Kids, Spank Rock, and Kid Sister. Yacht flailed around to his eccentric pop beats and then decided he had enough of the giant stage and made his way into the crowd. It may have been rainy, but the eclectic lineup sums up what these free shows are all about; awesome music in a crazy space with everyone collectively losing their minds. See you next summer.

Interview With Dave Walsh (The Explosion, The Loved Ones)

While on my way back home to Philly recently, I ran into the Explosion/the Loved Ones members Dave Walsh and Chris Gonzalez on the Chinatown bus. I’m sure most readers of our site know that the Explosion recently announced their plans to disband after nine years of constant touring, with two full-length albums (a third, Bury Me Standing, waiting in the wings) and a handful of EPs left in their wake. The band has been a favorite of mine for quite some time now and I wouldn’t hesitate to put their best work Flash Flash Flash (Jade Tree) as one of the best punk rock albums of the last ten years.

I’ll be sad to see them go but at least the boys are keeping at it with different projects, specially Dave and Chris who recently joined the Loved Ones as full-time members. I had a chance to shoot Dave a few questions as the band was on their way to California to play the Explosion’s final West Coast show.

Damian has said before that band members being tired of the constant touring contributed to the break up. Were there any other factors in the decision to call it a day?
Well, for the most part I think Matt was finding touring to be more tedious than anything else. He was figuring that the law of diminishing returns was happening for the band, and in a way I totally can see that at this point. After touring constantly for nearly nine years, if there is not a substantial growth after the fifteenth tour, frustration definitely takes it’s toll.
