The great Hilly Kristal, the man who first let the Ramones and Talking Heads play at CBGB’s all those years ago thus, and making history, died yesterday from complications stemming from his battle with lung cancer. Music in general has lost a great man today.

A private memorial service will be held soon, with a public one to be announced later on. Booking collective NYC Punk is stating that vigils are being held in front of CBGB’s and encourage mourners to come with flowers. Contributions in Kristal’s name can be made to his foundation, The Hilly Kristal Foundation For Musicians And Artists (168 Second Avenue, PMB 207, New York, NY 10003) or to the American Cancer Society.
