Yo La Tengo Playing Cancer Benefit In L.I.

Indie-pop darlings Yo La Tengo haven’t toured all that much this summer, but the group plans to make up for it by playing an intimate benefit gig on Long Island on October 19th. The SASS Foundation, The Fader Magazine, and Insound.com are sponsoring the show and all proceeds benefit cancer research and education. Deathwish Inc. Expands, Plans New Releases

Juggernauts of the hardcore scene, Deathwish Inc., have announced their plans to merge with long running label, Malfunction Records. The move will combine Deathwish and Malfunction under the Deathwish, Inc. banner “effective immediately.” This leaves Deathwish running Malfunction, in a move that label head Jacob Bannon describes as, “No teams or sub-labels. Two labels, one crew running them.” IndieHQ.com interviewed Bannon about the unusual move of two independent record labels combining with one another and his thoughts on the matter can be found here.

As usual, Deathwish continues to pump out new releases and audio players from Trap Them, The Great Deceiver, and Bitter End can be found below.

Both Tegan and Sara and Against Me! recently made new videos for their respective new releases. Tegan and Sara’s first video from their newest effort The Con (Sire/Vapor), which is really good, is for the catchy song “Back In Your Head.” They are playing a hell of a lot of dates to promote The Con, so check out their myspace to see when they come to your town.

Band Spotlight: FIYA

I hate it when I write band spotlights and the band has been around for a couple of years. It makes me feel like I’ve been missing out on something for a long time. A good example of this is FIYA. FIYA’s first 7″ came out in the summer of 2002 and their last CD, Better Days came out on No Idea records May 2005. Like most bands on No Idea, FIYA combines fast pop punk chords with raw throated vocals, which bare resemblance to early Lawrence Arms songs.

I saw FIYA open for Fucked Up last month and they were easily the most enjoyable act of the night. FIYA stood out from the hardcore line up with their melodic, energetic songs and kids that were otherwise too scared of accidentally getting kicked in the face walked up to the front of the stage to dance.

FIYA just ended a tour but you can catch them at The Fest 6 this October.

Blonde Redhead, I’m From Barcelona | McCarren Pool | 8/5/07

Despite Blonde Redhead’s dazzling guitar interplay, which dominated their set on the gorgeous Sunday afternoon, Sweden’s I’m From Barcelona stole the show from right underneath them. Their NYC debut featured their trademark perfect pop, as well as 15 people on stage all completely immersed in the music. Whether it was jumping around, throwing confetti, or stage diving on a raft (see photo above), the group made a mess of the pool, but it was all in the name of fun, which is really the only way you can describe I’m From Barcelona.
