Midlake | Webster Hall, NYC | 9/8/07

With every visit to New York, Midlake moves up in venue size, this time around headlining Webster Hall on Saturday Night. The band started the set strong with the title track from their most recent full length Van Occupanter (World’s Fair) and played their “hit” song (by blog standards) “Roscoe” as their third selection of the night. Despite some technical difficulties, like keyboards disconnecting, guitar straps breaking etc., Midlake’s performance sounded amazing. The problems did seem to frustrate the band though, which took away from their performance a bit. Towards the end of the set they seemed to lighten up a bit and they even rocked out a bit during “Head Home,” the last song before the encore. The set relied heavily on Van Occupanther, playing nearly the entire album. They also played a few cuts from Bamnan and Silvercork including “Kingfish Pies” and “Balloon Maker,” a rendition of “The Pills Won’t Help You Know,” a collaboration they wrote with The Chemical Brothers, and a song from an old EP that they jokingly stated that “only the true fans will know.”
