7-Inch Corner: Goverment Warning/Dillinger Four
Ladies and gentlemen, I’d like to annouce a new column I will be updating every Thursday here at LNWF; The 7-inch corner (Ta-dah!). Every week, I will be talking about one or two (or seven) 7-inchs, some new or old that I’ve picked up on my travels of late. So follow after the jump for the first edition of the 7-inch corner, with Government Warning’s Arrested and Dillinger Four’s More Songs About Girlfriends And Bubblegum.
Government Warning-Arrested (Grave Mistake)
I’m sure I’ve made most know that I really enjoy the old school thrash of RVA’s Government Warning. Last year’s No Moderation (Feral Ward) was a throwback to the no frills-all thrills hardcore of the 80s that, when done properly, will never die. But Arrested showcases a new direction for the band. My only complaint about No Moderation was that it sounded like one long (but kick ass) song. This 7-inch showcases a, somewhat, more laid back band. Now, don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying the band has started to wear sandals and listen to O.A.R. The band has eased up on pushing everything at 11 to say….a 9, in terms of speed and Spinal Tap vernacular. Arrested has all the punch of their full-length but with more a groove to the punishing snarl. The release shows they are not willing to fall in the trap of making the same hardcore album on repeat.
Dillinger Four-More Songs About Girlfriends And Bubblegum (Mutant Pop)

I must say, this release was definitely high on my “must get” list. The famous, very out of print 7-inch from the best punk band in the world, D4. I wasn’t shocked that I recently stumbled upon it on Ebay, but rather how easy it was for to me to obtain it. Score for me. Anyways, I must say, as much as I worship this band, their very earliest stuff always sounded kinda weak to me, like a band who was just on the brink of discovering their greatness (See: This Shit Is Genius). Yeah, it’s rare, but More Songs is the sound of hearing a fucking incredible band come together.
Think I’m full of shit.? Go see D4 live (probably in Gainesville or Minnesota, because they never tour anymore) and you’ll understand why I have said to the point of exhaustion why D4 is the greatest living punk band. In Paddy we trust!
