Aesop Rock/The Octopus Project | The Middle East Downstairs | Boston, MA | 9/24/07

It’s always fun watching a crowd get converted from the cross-armed, shoe-gazing types into the arm waving, dancing-around-like-you-just-don’t-care kind of audience. Austin, Texas’ The Octopus Project started off the night with a crowd who clearly had little interest in seeing anyone that wasn’t Aesop Rock, but they were slowly won over by the bands use of heavy beats backed by layered guitar and the occasional theremin. In between constantly switching instruments and warming up the crowd with their instrumental dance-pop, the group showed an impressive ability to blend layer and layer of noise, while never missing the beat. Towards the end, with songs like “An Evening With Rthrtha” and “Porno Disaster” (which apparently was named after something you wouldn’t expect, but the group wouldn’t elaborate), the band had most of the crowd where they wanted them, captivated by theremin and dancing their asses off.

Oi! Spin Celebrates Punk’s 30th Birthday

In celebration of punk’s 30th birthday (way to hang in there old timer!), Spin Magazine has thrown together a pretty massive tribute in their October issue. The main feature is an article with the always-pleasant Johnny Rotten. As usual, the man provides many-a-memorable quote including comparing the the Clash to Status Quo, calling the early CBGB’s atmosphere a “a world of foolishness,” and his distaste for the Ramones, amongs other critiques.

Perhaps the most interesting feature is the UK, East Coast and West Coast Punk reunion sections. Bands featured include the Avengers, X, The Slits, The Damned, Suicide, among many others. Be sure to check out the new Spin …and uh…up the punks?

Pissed Jeans Want You To Try Their “Ice Cream”

Photo Cred-Jason

Pissed Jeans’ lead singer Matt Korvette looks like a man who needs a lot of ice cream. Regular ol’ claims adjuster off stage, David Yow-inspired madman while on, yelping and flailing, with a possessed stare that would scare your grandmother. Check out the very “Black Hole Son” influenced “I’ve Still Got You (Ice Cream)” after the jump.

Album Review: Modern Life Is War “Midnight In America” (Equal Vision)

1422.jpg
So for about a month now, I’ve been trying to wrap my head around Modern Life Is War’s highly-anticipated third full-length Midnight In America. Needless to say, Witness was a landmark album, not only for the band but for modern hardcore. It was a lightning bolt to a scene overrun by complacency. With so many other bands, the next act is always a difficult transition.
