Camel Cigarettes Exploit The Indie Rock Universe

Apparently, Camel cigarettes decided to market it’s cancer sticks to the “Indie Rock” crowd and has gotten themselves in a shit ton of trouble. The so called “Indie Rock Universe” campaign was featured in a recent issue of Rolling Stone, and has caused law suits from nine states for using cartoon in cigarette advertising (RIP Joe Camel). It is also speculated that the bands who were not aware of the use of their name in the campaign may launch a class action law suit. Check out this article on Stereogum for more info. The campaign covers a wide array of the underground from “Intergalactic Ear Killers” (Pissed Jeans, Fucked Up, High On Fire, Lightning Bolt), Angry Red Planet (Against Me!, Ted Leo, Nightwatchman) to the Spazmodica (Les Savy Fav, Parts and Labor, Liars). Hell, Ted Leo was not happy winning a contest for Taco Bell he didn’t enter, I am sure this will not sit well with most if not all of the bands who were linked to this campaign.
