The Art of J. Bannon Featured In Gallery Show

No, we haven’t become an art blog or anything like that, but when it comes to the news about the always incredible artwork by Jake Bannon, we can’t pass up reporting on it. Bannon’s work has been featured on numerous Converge releases and on albums put out by his label, Deathwish, Inc., but will now be featured in an upcoming gallery show this weekend. If you’re in the Los Angeles area, head over to the Tradition shop, a streetwear boutique owned by the guitar player from Strife, to see an artshow featuring not just Bannon’s work, but also that of Derek Albeck, Marco Zamora, Christoper Cuseo (Knife Fight), Axis, and many more.

Check out a preview of some of the pieces after the jump!

Interview With Steak Mtn.

thrashunreal.jpg
I had a chance to talk with Brooklyn-based illustrator and designer Steak Mtn., AKA Christopher Norris. Over the years, he has made a name for himself through projects with bands, including The Draft, Atom & His Package, and Fake Problems. You’ve probably, however, seen most of his designs through Against Me!. Chris has built a creative relationship with the band that includes doing artwork for 7-inchs, tour posters and most recently, The New Wave Collection, a line of t-shirts that represents every song on the band’s most recent album New Wave.We chatted about drawing and design, how his relationship with Against Me! began and what he has lined up for Steak Mtn.

Why did you move to New York from Florida five years ago?
Chris: I came here with a girl I was dating. She wanted to go to school. Right about that time, I started taking what I was doing a little more seriously. I didn’t have a college education. I was just in crummy bands and toured and I ended up laying out and drawing pictures for records. You’re not really world-weary until you get into a big city and see that you aren’t the only kid that draws pictures.

Band Spotlight: Sakes Alive!!

Who: Sakes Alive!!

What do they sound like?: A mix of Strike Anywhere, Polar Bear Club, and From Ashes Rise, sans the crustiness.

Why YOU should listen!: I’d must say, for only having a three-song demo, Rochester, NY’s Sakes Alive!! are miles ahead of many bands at their level. Right off the bat, I was incredibly impressed when I popped in their demo last week. The songs are undeniably urgent, passion-filled and grab you from the first chord. All you NYC kids should stop by to see the band play at Lost and Found Bar in Greenpoint on Feb. 29th.

You can check out Sakes Alive!! on our Late Night Mix player to the right. Also, check out an awesome interview our friends at Mutiny Zine did with SA!! leader Chris here.
