7-Inch Corner: The Monocles - “Outta Yr Mind”

monoclesep7inch.jpg

Hells yeah! 7-Inch Corner is back, baby! Today I got a tasty treat courtesy of Houston, TX’s The Monocles. I don’t know about you, but I’d definitely give money to an alligator playing guitar on the street, mostly because well, it’s an alligator that could eat my arm. Props to Mitch Clem’s unmistakable style there.

The Monocles play simple, stripped-to-the-skivvies, dirty punk rock ’n roll similar to bands like Modern Machines and the Marked Men. There’s no fringes of death metal, hardcore, folks, electro-dance-bonanza or whatever here. Just bad whiskey, evil women, and good times. Side A’s title track is probably the best of the 3 songs here, “Tonight” is OK, and I really like “Darken Your Door” as well. All in all, it was great way to start my day crankin’ these guys through my headphones as I fought the 15-degree cold to get to work, wishing I was in Houston with these dudes not having to stress over winter gear and my ass freezing to death on a bus seat. Oh well, at least I’ve got the Monocles.

Interview With Paint It Black

Anyone that reads this site knows how much we love Philly’s phinest (intentional) hardcore bros Paint It Black. The band just released their ferocious third full-length New Lexicon (Jade Tree) last week. I’m not going to really beat around the bush here because in this situation the proof is in the pudding. Just listen to the album and compare it with their other albums and you’ll see what I mean. I’d rather have the band speak for themselves.

I talked with members Dan Yemin, Andy Nelson and Jared Shavelson a few weeks ago, while I was on the clock at work no less, when they were in NYC. For nearly an hour and a half, we talked about the early stages of the record, their recent record release shows in Philadelphia and, of course, their infamous house show down at the Fest VI in Gainesville.

I know there was another title for the album before it came out, “Gravity Wins.” Why did you change it to the New Lexicon? What does it mean?

Andy: That was never the title of the record. It was a working title and someone misunderstood something in an interview that happened while we were making the record.

Dan: I said ‘tentatively titled.’

Andy: One person posts something on one site and it just goes everywhere. Titling songs, records and bands is the most difficult thing.

Dan: It’s such a battle. You’ve spent two years working on this body of stuff that you’ve poured everything into and then you have to choose one to three words to define it.

Die! Die! Die! Tour! Tour! Tour!

They may not have the most subtle name ever, but the New Zealand trio of Die! Die! Die! certainly know how to grab your attention. Their repetitious sensibility spills over to their latest album name, Promises Promises, which carries a large debt owed to Sonic Youth and the Pixies. The group will playing multiple shows (coincidence, eh?) at SXSW ‘08 along with hitting the pavement as they criss cross the country. Click here here here to listen to some tracks and decide if you’re going going going to buy buy buy their album, out now now now on SAF Records.

Too much?

David Karsten Daniels Does Not Like To Fly

Although there may be some irony between the title of this post and the image right above, David Karsten Daniel’s country twang is dead serious. On his second album for Fat Cat records Fear of Flying, which is due out on April 29th, Daniel’s utilizes a wide range of instruments and influences to craft laid back, soulful, down home tracks. Lucky for you, you can preview some of David Karsten Daniel’s material right here on his MySpace, or see him live on a handful of tour dates in the next couple of months (although I’m pretty sure he’ll have to fly to get to SXSW…).

Check out some tour dates after the jump!
