Happy Opening Day

I’m not sure if many of you out there are baseball fans, but personally, I’m sick of all this Final Four nonsense and cold weather and ready for some baseball. Let’s go Phillies!

Rude Boys Rejoice! Possible Specials Reunion In ‘08

Inspired by The Pixies and all the other big reunions over the past few years, The Specials frontman Terry Hall said the band is in the midst of planning their own reunion tour.

“Well we’re still trying to put dates together, but hopefully September/ October time. We need to spend the Summer rehearsing… I think it’s taken me 30 years to realise we could do it really well.”

Band Spotlight: 1994

Lancaster, PA generally brings to mind thoughts that involve horse and buggies, tourist traps, and all you can eat breakfast buffets. Face-melting technical rock really isn’t on the forefront of that list. After hearing guitar and drum duo 1994, your perception of the Amish capital of the world might need some retooling.

I went to Circle of Hope in South Philly recently to see a friends’ band play, expecting to see some amigos and enjoy a night of live music. 1994 proceeded to put on one of the best live shows I’ve seen in years. The band has achieved the perfect combination of unbelievable musicianship and stage presence, and their recently recorded demo is a fair indicator of their talent. Gravely sung/screamed vocals, uber-technical guitar and some of the most intense drumming ever all combine to make a band I can’t wait to see again and hear some new tunes from in the future. Plus, one of their songs is called “Sexual Alien vs. Sexual Predator.” If that doesn’t make you love them, I don’t know what will.

Check out some songs off of their Winter ‘08 demo here.

Be Your Own Pet Get Violent…With Food!

Be Your Own Pet’s new record Get Awkward is one of my favorites of the year thus far. It’s full of gritty guitars and great hooks that will make the Christian mothers in Middle America cringe. Universal doesn’t want to offend these mothers, hence the big buzz on the blogs last week about Universal pulling three tracks off Be Your Own Pet’s new record because the suits deemed the lyrics too violent. The tracks Becky, Blow Yr Mind and Black Hole can be found pretty easily (wink wink) with simple searches of Hype Machine. You should definitely pick them up, unless you want to import the cd for $30. Supposedly the songs will come out in the US in EP form later this year.

Another violent song that snuck it’s way onto the album “Food Fight” has a brand new video for you to enjoy below. Watch out for flying pizza!
