Album Review: Broadway Calls - “S/T” (Adeline)
Holy shit. I didn’t think I’d like this at all. I’m really iffy these days about straight-up pop punk bands, mostly because a lot of them sound like fucking New Found Glory. There, now that I said that and made my peace, this album is amazing. Broadway Calls have unleashed a saccharine-soaked tribute to old school pop punk with their self-titled full-length.
The album makes me nostalgic. Me at like 15 or so, totally rocking out to Digger and other pop punk bands as I sat on the curb after school and waited for my friends to get out of their later classes. Oblivious to almost everything except songs about girls and making honest, teenage, and almost amateurish attempts at political commentary. Let me reiterate, there is no way you should really be able to listen to this seriously, and yet, I do. “Suffer The Kids” in particular, a ridiculously catchy song that has me singing “not innocent whoa!” down the street the past two days.
It’s a breath of fresh air, almost literally, to listen to this band. I can’t really stress enough how odd it was to find a totally non-cliched pop punk band that just have fun and make me want to have more fun, but Broadway Calls definitely pulled that off.
