Bored This Weekend? We Have The Solution

Posted on 20 June 2008 by Jason

So it’s finally the weekend. Your chance to kick back, sleep in late, and catch up on bills. Or you could have a ton of fun and see lots of awesome bands for free! If you ask us at LNWF, we’d certainly take the latter. Alkaline Trio, also known as “the band that used to be really good but then appeared on The Hills and now they’re not cool,” is playing a free show at a mall in southern New Jersey, and 80’s punx Reagan Youth are playing on an abandoned island off the coast of Manhattan. Huzzah! More information after the jump!

Ever hear of Governor’s Island? Yeah, us neither. Well apparently this place has been abandoned for a while and the city of New York finally decided to clean it up. On June 21st, the Make Music NY Festival will be taking over this tiny little piece of land for an afternoon of extremely loud good times, dubbed “Punk Island.” 75 bands will be playing on 13 stages, including a set by Reagan Youth. The best part is, since it’s on an island with nothing else on it, the music will be played as loud as humanely possible. Bring earplugs. Check out the full schedule here. Simply take the 1 train downtown to the last stop, South Ferry, and then take the ferry to Governors Island (the ship leaves from the Battery Maritime Building, where David Byrne is currently doing his “Playing the Building” exhibit).

If you like skateboarding, then you’re in for a treat. Head down to the Monmouth Mall ( Routes 35&36 – Eatontown, NJ – (732) 542-1478)) on Sunday, June 22nd to catch a free Alkaline Trio performance and to see some skaters tear up the parking lot. Here is the full schedule:
