Song Of The Day: Beachwood Sparks – “Sister Rose”

Beachwood Sparks released a single in early 1998 for “Desert Skies” and immediately there seemed to be something magical about them. They sounded like California, with a desert-country-psychedelic sound full of melodies and sugar sweet lyrics. I was 16 and had a brand new license, and the summer of ’98 was spent following them around L.A. with my friends.
By 2000 Sub Pop released their self titled debut and we were certain that our little secret would be discovered, and they’d be the biggest band in the world. The album was amazing, but people never seemed to catch on…maybe it was just a California thing.
“Sister Rose” really engulfs a lot of their sound, from slide guitars to harmonies to short bursts of psychedelic freak outs.
