Black Lips - All photos by Bill Shouldis

The Black Lips are a circus on stage by themselves, but add King Khan & The Shrines and Deerhunter to the mix and you’re going to going to have pure mayhem. Sunday’s show at McCarren Pool was just that. It was hard to find a focal point most of the time. TP was flying while an old dude were skating on stage. Pillows were being ripped apart while flowers were placed in butt cheeks and spit was being swapped. When can you say you saw all that at a show? Some dumbasses have been asking where rock ‘n’ roll has gone? Well, maybe if you listened to all these bands more, you’d realize it hasn’t gone anywhere. Viva The Black Lips!

Trailer For The Black Lips “Let It Be” Released

Although the movie has yet to go into production, a trailer has been posted for the film Let It Be, starring The Black Lips. The band will play the fictional band The Renegades in the film, which will examine the indie-rock/punk landscape  of the mid-80s with references to The Replacements (if you didn’t get that from the title), Husker Du and Sonic Youth all thrown in. The trailer doesn’t offer much but you can check it out here.

7-Inch Corner: Fucked Up - “David Christmas”

I finally received my gift-wrapped “David Christmas” 7-inch from the band known to the New York Times as —— –. Yes, Fucked Up. “David Christmas” is a holiday tune that is considerably more rocking, as expected I suppose, than “Jingle Bell Rock.” It will surely be a favorite for Saint Nick-lovin’-hardcore kids every December for years to come.

As for the much hyped Christmas-Hanukkah-Kwanzaa b-side “Stars on 45,” which features James Murphy of LCD Soundsytem, Nelly Furtado, an actress from Degrassi: The Next Generation, The Black Lips, Face to Face, The Faint among many, many others, it is literally just “stars” leaving voicemails wishing people happy holidays while Fucked Up provide the festive musical backdrop, such as “Frosty The Snowman.” Not quite what I think anyone was expecting, but I am sure the band found it entertaining. They also mention in the liner notes that they tried calling comedic genius David Cross 10 times, but received no response. Perhaps he was too busy providing his talents to Alvin and The Chipmunks.
