The Faint, Jaguar Love | The Trocadero, Philly | 8/17/08

The Faint got Philadelphia so sexually-pent up last Sunday night at the Trocadero. I think it might have been an full-out orgy.

As several contributors to this site can attest to, if there’s a dance party to be had within a 30 mile radius of Philly, chances are I’m there. Hence when The Faint announced a tour with the new Blood Brothers/Pretty Girls Make Graves hybrid outfit Jaguar Love, tickets were in my hand almost immediately. The Faint proved that they are hands down the best live electro rock band in existence today, if not the best ever. It was legendary.

Although the lineup wasn’t the strongest and the heat was particularly brutal, hordes of people still made the trek out to Coney Island for the annual Siren Fest on Saturday. Broken Social Scene, Stephen Malkmus and The Jicks, Beach House, Islands, Ra Ra Riot and Jaguar Love were amongst the headliners this year.

One of the highlights included Ra Ra Riot’s inspired midday set. The only way I can think to describe them is Moz meets The Arcade Fire, done by a bunch of model-esque indie rockers. They have a new album out on Barsuk in August so be on the lookout for it.

Having Stephen Malkmus and Broken Social Scene on at the same time? Bummer. So I had to split my time between the two but they were both exceptional.

Another observation: There were some serious assholes in the press area this year. I really wonder how some of these people got in to the area. I’m not trying to sound like a pretentious prick but I don’t like getting pushed by drunk, Buckcherry-esque doucheholes.

Assholes aside, I had fun and my ginger ass didn’t get sunburn so cheers all around from me.

So, will this be the last Siren Fest? Personally, I doubt it.

Check out more pictures after the jump.

MP3: Jaguar Love (Ex-Blood Brothers, Pretty Girls Make Graves)

Jaguar Love, containing members of recently defunct Northwest bands, The Blood Brothers and Pretty Girls Make Graves, have posted a track from their debut full length Take Me To The Sea. The track, “Bats over the Pacific Ocean,” was posted in the beginning of April, but I just found it buried on my desktop yesterday and gave it a spin. This song is fucking fantastic! It’s super catchy and Johnny Whitney’s unique vocals sound great. Even if you were not a fan of his work in The Blood Brothers, I recommend you check this song out.

The full length will be released on August 19th via Matador. Make sure to check them out this year’s Siren Festival on Coney Island, July 19th.
