Blacklisted, Ceremony | First Unitarian Church, Philly | 6/5/08

It is a rare occasion when you go to a show and enjoy each and every band on the bill. It is even more rare when almost everyone in attendance stays inside for every band, especially during one of the hottest weeks Philadelphia has seen so far this summer. Last week, however, I had the pleasure of witnessing one of those rare experiences at the First Unitarian Church. Simply put, Blacklisted, Ceremony, Life Long Tragedy, and Sabertooth Zombie all straight up killed it that day.

Bridge and Tunnel, Slingshot Dakota, Attica! Attica! | Fontanas | 6/05/2008

Bridge and Tunnel and Attica! Attica! played Fontanas in NYC last night with their friends Slingshot Dakota. B & T put on a great show as usual and the new songs from their upcoming full-length sounded great. The record is definitely one of our most anticipated releases of the year so be on the lookout for it this summer from the great people at No Idea.

This was the first time I saw Attica! Attica! I knew of them because of the Marathon connection but I was not expecting them to perform as an acoustic duo. They pulled it off well despite a few slip ups, which were played off well (perhaps their first tour together?). For the last two songs Pat and Jeff of B& T joined them on stage to play.

More about the show and photos after the jump.

M83 | Bowery Ballroom - NYC | 6/4/08

Frenchman Anthony Gonzalez named his shoegaze/experimental electronic act M83 after the galaxy for a reason. His guitar sounds reverberate around your body while the sounds of numerous synths swirl around inside your brain, giving you the feeling that you may, in fact, be floating in space. Last night, the group stopped at Bowery Ballroom in support of their newest effort, Saturdays=Youth. While this album takes the band in a new, more poppier direction, their sound is still distinctly their own. Whether it was interpreting older songs like “A Guitar and a Heart” into a full on club banger, complete with a pounding bass drum beat, or making a recent song like “Skin of the Night” go from what sounds like a kind of cheesy 80’s inspired song on the album, into a beautiful, transcendent experience in person; Gonzalez knows how to tweak his tracks just enough to get as much as he can out of them live. I had been waiting to see M83 for over two years now and after last night’s show, I can say that it was certainly worth the wait.

Cursive | Mercury Lounge, NYC | 6/03/2008

Cursive’s show at the Mercury Lounge on Tuesday night was dedicated to playing material from their new album, which they are two weeks into recording.  They played the entire new album from start to finish in the planned sequence, though as Kasher mentioned the track list will probably get pulled in a million directions before release.  The eleven new songs were played in about 45 minutes with possible song titles like “Blood Red Sun,” “Going to Hell” and “Diablo.”  Usually, Kasher writes loose concept albums so is this one possibly about Hell? The third track they played, “Hips” as labeled on the set list (see photo below) was amazing bringing together the best of their older works like Domestica with the refinement of their newer albums.

The new songs had some balls to them that the band did not really show on Happy Hollow. New drummer Cornbread Compton makes for a great addition to the band, adding a new style that seemed to give the band some new life.  Kasher seemed to be more emotionally invested in the new songs, perhaps just because they are so fresh. He seemed more excited to be playing these songs then anytime I saw them during the touring cycle for Happy Hollow.   Needless to say, we here at LNWF are very amped on this new album.

Stephen Brodsky | Live At Generation Records, NYC | 5/25/08

Photos by Bill Shouldis

Former Cave In member Stephen Brodsky stopped by Generation Records this past Sunday with his acoustic guitar for an in-store performance. The set was a mix of songs from his latest solo album, Black Ribbon Award, the Pet Genius full-length and even two Jupiter-era Cave In songs (”Brain Candle” and “New Moon”). Hell, the dude even threw in a Desmond Dekker song and a righteous cover of Jawbreaker’s “Save Your Generation.” Check out a video after the jump, along with some more pictures.
