One of my favorites from “back in the day,” Brooklyn’s Friendly Fire, reunited for shits and giggles last week at the illustrious First Lutheran Church, home to DIY collective The Bronx Underground alongside pop-punk maniacs Patent Pending. It was an awesome night and fun time with no stress and an opportunity to remember a band I saw a bunch of times and genuinely enjoyed. And of course, they closed with their ode to all-ages DIY shows “For The Kids,” which according to singer Jordan Cooper was a tribute to everyone there for keeping underground music going.

I remember Friendly Fire fondly, they were a great band of great dudes who weren’t afraid to admit their lack of connection to any “popular” sound in underground music, and instead played straight-up old-fashioned hardcore influenced as much by the Gorilla Biscuits as Hatebreed or whatever kids listen to these days. It’s an honesty you don’t see as much as you’d really like to these days.

Brooklyn’s Friendly Fire Reuniting For One Night Only

One of my favorite (and grossly under-appreciated) local hardcore acts, Friendly Fire, will be back for one night only on February 15th in the Bronx at the First Lutheran Church (home of the DIY collective The Bronx Underground).

From 2002 to 2004, Friendly Fire brought straight-up hardcore fun, even releasing Initiative on Blackout! Records. Since then the members have gone on to various other projects, including NY-based metal bands Only Hell Remains and Everything’s Ruined, and NJ’s My Turn To Win.

Click below for the flier, Friendly Fire’s video for the song “The One Who Pulls The Trigger”, and check out the Bronx Underground site for directions.

Upcoming Bronx Underground Shows

So my good friends over at the Bronx Underground have some upcoming shows with some great lineups you should be checking out.

Enjoy pirates and sing-alongs? Their May 31 show with Set Your Goals, Just Surrender, Dead On A Friday, Driving Fast and Fireworks is probably for you, because Lordy knows there will be pirates involved somehow.

On June 2, Soho Violet is playing along with a personal favorite of mine, The Arsons. In case you didn’t know, that’s the band Ernie (from Token Entry and Grey Area, fools!) is in now. Guaranteed to be a good time there too.

So give yourselves a mid-week, early summer treat, check ‘em out and support DIY show promotion in New York. Information on getting tickets beforehand and directions can be found at their website or Myspace profile.
