The Constantines | Southpaw - Brooklyn, NY | April 19,2008

After a filling Passover seder, I made my way to Southpaw to catch gruff Canadians The Constantines do their thing. The show was nothing out of the ordinary: solid band with a couple solid releases under their belts puts on entertaining rock show for a nearly-sold out crowd on a Saturday night. The group did debut some new tunes off their newly released Kensington Heights (Arts & Crafts), but they didn’t abandon their back catalog, with tracks like “Hotline Operator” and “Young Lions” making appearances.

The highlight of the show? Besides a cover of AC/DC’s “Thunderstruck,” their version of “Nighttime/Anytime” with a jazz/funk-inspired bridge served as a way for the group to get out of their normal rock confines and experiment a little bit. Sadly, it was a brief moment, but it was nice to hear a band like this just let loose and interpret one of their best songs.
