Be Your Own Pet, The King Left | Maxwells, Hoboken, NJ | 2/21/08

be your own pet

Be Your Own Pet ripped through a ferocious set last night at Maxwell’s showcasing a lot of the new tracks from their forthcoming Get Awkward (Ecstatic Peace).  New tracks included “Zombie Graveyard Party!” apparently about “fucking zombies,” “Becky,” the self proclaimed “slow jam of the year” and “Food Fight” which was about yelling “Food Fight!” really loud.  The front of the crowd was dancing so much, that someone’s lipstick fell on stage which prompted vocalist Jemina to pick it up and put on her “War Paint” as seen above.  She also dropped a nice anecdote hoping that said lipstick didn’t just give her herpes.  Beautiful.  The show ended with the crowd taking over the stage and stomping all over it. Check out the photos after the jump.

Supporting BYOP, was our friends in The King Left who warmed up the crowd nicely with their pounding, dancey drum beats and catchy melodies.  These dudes continue to get better with each peformance, make sure to check them out now! Pictures from the show below.

The King Left | Sin-E | 03/10/07

It’s no secret that The King Left are one of my favorite unsigned bands in NYC. The band has had an exciting year and a half; two Sammy Siegler (Gorilla Biscuits, Rival Schools) produced EPs (The King Left and New York Nothing), an opening slot for emo god Jeremy Enigk, and finally a top unsigned band feature in Alternative Press.

Saturday marked the band’s final performance at the latest LES club casualty Sin-E, where they played their first show. It was obviously a special night, as they celebrated all of their accomplishments in their young musical career and pressed forward, tighter then ever.

The band will be setting up a three-week residency at Pianos in April. Be sure to check the guys out.
