Album Review: The Out_Circuit - “Pierce The Empire With A Sound” (Lujo Reords)

I can’t really stand this record. I’m sorry, I tried. I try hard to be open-minded about stuff because I wasn’t so much so when I was younger. Unfortunately, Pierce The Empire… by The Out_Circuit still falls short. Not really sure of who this band was before listening to it, I was surprised to find out they put themselves into an ambient/post-rock and hardcore vein, headed up by former Frodus frontman Nathan Burke. I’m sorry to say though that they didn’t really live up to any expectations that I’d drawn.

The first thing that came to mind when listening to it was “These Arms Are Snakes’ Oxeneers, but without any balls.” And while for some, the ambient smoothness of The Out_Circuit might work for them, the whole thing just seems limp and flaccid, with even the raging screaming parts of songs like “Come Out Shooting” not really conveying anything. It’s sorta lame that the hardest and softest parts of this album both illicit exactly the same response from me. “Meh.”
