Not Banned In DC

Earlier this month the D.C. Council tabled a bill originally proposed by council member Jim Graham in February that would have placed restrictions on all age shows within the district.

If the bill was accepted it would have prohibited people under 18 from entering clubs that serve alcohol after 11 p.m. on weekdays and midnight on weekends except in July and August when the underage curfew is midnight every day.

Dcist.com has done a really good job of covering the ordeal. Check out their post on the tabling of the bill and click the links in the article to learn more.

Ian Mackaye Testifies Against Bill for All Ages Ban in D.C.

On February 6, Jim Graham, D.C. Councilmember, introduced the “Protection and Safety Act of Underage Persons Amendment Act of 2007″ that will restrict all age shows in the D.C. area. An area synonymous with Ian Mackaye, Dischord Records, Straight Edge, Fugazi, and all age punk shows.

Graham was inspired to propose this bill upon the death of a 17 year old at a Go-Go club on January 20. A stray bullet killed the teenager. Read more about the incident here.

On January 25, Graham held a seven hour roundtable discussion so that D.C. citizens and others affected by the proposed legislation could voice their concerns and opinions. One of the people present at the meeting was D.C. punk’s figurehead, Ian Mackaye. Below is a youtube clip of Mackaye insisting on the insanity of the bill and how “this legislation would wipe out something so inspirational for so many people.”

In the beginning of the clip Mackaye speaks the numerous passionate people against the legislation that were present at the meeting, however, on Graham’s website the roundtable discussion is perceived in a different light. The discussion was called “sucessful”. Nothing was covered as to the opposition to the bill on his website, only the stubborn ideas he already had before the roundtable discussion was cited. Read more about the “success” here

No news as of when the public will know whether or the bill will be accepted as law. When more information becomes available I’ll make a follow up post.

Positive Youth Fest 2006

Last winter break I wandered around American University in Washington D.C. for almost an hour trying to find the annual Positive Youth Fest. That may have been because of my terrible sense of direction but regardless, this year I’m determined to go.

The Positive Youth Fest is a two day music festival, occuring from December 29 - 30, showcasing some of D.C.’s local talent like Mass Movement of the Moth and The Max Levine Ensemble. The fest also stages a couple of D.I.Y workshops ranging from bike repair to punk rock sex education (whatever that means), and a mixtape swap. The admission is $3 a day which includes vegan refreshments and a line up of nine bands per day. The proceeds support The Brian Mackenzie Infoshop which is also another place I spent a long time trying to find.

If you are in the D.C. area around the time of the fest you should definitely check out what it has to offer. Plus, the venue for it this year, The Warehouse Next Door, is so easy to find that even I won’t get lost.

Fort Reno Free Summer Concerts

I take the DC metro to and from work every day and I always see tons of people diving into barely closed metro car doors. If you’re bored after work, throw out your plans of sitting in front of a computer screen and whip out your best indie dance moves at Fort Reno near the AU metro stop.

Fort Reno hosts FREE summer concerts and has been doing so for several years. Fort Reno’s concerts attract many indie rock, pop, and post punk fans with their incredible line ups. Notable veterans, Fugazi, used to play Fort Reno every year.

Tonight DC’s Mass Movement of the Moth cranks out their dancey, post hardcore jams. On July 31, Ian Mackaye and Amy Farina’s band, The Evens, will be playing. To see what else is coming up go here: www.fortreno.com
