In Memoriam: Ron Asheton Of The Stooges

Posted on January 6th, 2009 by Costa

LNWF is sad to report that the legendary Stooges guitarist Ron Asheton was found dead in his Ann Arbor, Michigan home this morning, according to a report by Freep.com.

Police are reporting that they received a call where the caller, who is not identified, stated they had not heard from the 60-year old in several days and could not contact him. The cause of death is still under investigation but apparently there is no suspicion of foul play.

The Stooges, arguably best known for being the band that gave us Iggy Pop, first formed in 1967 in Ann Arbor and went on to release four albums, the latest being 2007’s The Weirdness featuring Pop, the Asheton brothers, and former Minutemen bassist Mike Watt replacing bassist Dave Alexander, who died in 1975.

We here at Late Night Wallflower extend our condolences to Asheton’s family in this difficult time.

In Memoriam: Dominic Mallory

Posted on December 11th, 2008 by Aaron

Dominic Mallory, frontman for Boston-based hardcore band Last Lights, has sadly passed away over the weekend. Dominic was just 24. While I unfortunately only became aware of the group after reading about this tragedy, I strongly urge you to take a few minutes to listen to the songs available on their MySpace page as they instantly converted me into a fan.

My thoughts and condolences go out to Dominic’s band mates, friends, and family.

In Memoriam: Mikey Brosnan

Posted on November 26th, 2008 by Matthew

Mikey Brosnan, a pillar of the Philadelphia punk community, was killed this past weekend when he was hit by a drunk driver in West Philadelphia. He was 34 years old. Brosnan created the beloved DIY venue Stalag 13, which helped keep Philly’s independent scene alive in the mid 90′s. He also founded Goatboy Records (which later became Legion Records), who are most recognized for releasing records by Burn The Priest, who would later become Lamb of God. There is a message board thread going on at Phillyshreds, so check it out if you have any thoughts about Mikey. Our thoughts go out to his family.

Detroit-based soul singer Nathaniel Mayer has passed away at the age of 64. Mayer had been enduring a series of strokes days before his passing. He was a huge inspiration for artists like The Dirtbombs, The Black Keys, The Detroit Cobras (who covered his song “Village of Love”) and Holly Golightly. His last album, Why Don’t You Give It To Me?, which was released in 2007 through Alive-Naturalsound Records. Our thoughts go out to his family.

In Memoriam: Frank Navetta Of The Descendents

Posted on November 3rd, 2008 by Costa

It’s with great sadness that we report the passing of Frank Navetta, a founding member of The Descendents, who died on Friday, October 31st. Frank left the band to become a fisherman in 1985, but his contribution to the band, including work on their groundbreaking pop-punk record Milo Goes To College, will never be forgotten.  I know that personally The Descendents played a huge part in the soundtrack of my teen years, and I owe more than I could say to the band.

Our thoughts and condolences here at Late Night Wallflower go out to Frank’s family.  He will be missed.
