Maybe the heat made me hallucinate, but Dan Deacon’s ridiculously (almost scary) energetic live show converted me to a fan. Despite the hype, I could never get into his album and found myself somewhat perplexed over his recent popularity. However, his show at McCarren Pool this past Sunday proved that I seriously need to re-evaluate my opinion. While playing inside the pool (which I believe is a first for any artist at the Pool Parties series), Deacon injected his unique humor into the mix, trying to get everyone in attendance to participate. Whether it was mixing in with the crowd while singing, or creating the giant dance-off contest(he asked everyone to open up a hole for people to dance that would be large enough for “Less Than Jake and Mustard Plug to set up all of their equipment”), he seemed to generate smiles and laughter from everyone watching his performance. His synthesized beats and rhythms make the perfect soundtrack for a dance party and Dan Deacon created just that, heat be damned.

Sure, I could talk about opening acts Dengue Fever and Illinois, but honestly, I know deep down that most of the people in attendance this past Sunday were there for Man Man. Despite having an enormous stage at their disposal, the band jammed together in the center, as if they barely had room to move.

The wonderful folks at JellyNYC have brought back the awesome Pool Parties free summer concert series. This year kicked off with Merge Records act Superchunk, along with Oakley Hall and +/-, playing to a packed pool filled with people rocking out, sweating, playing dodgeball, and slip ‘n sliding. This weeks lineup is not to be missed, featuring Illinois,Dengue Fever, and headlining act Man Man.

Yeah, the free Sunday Pool Parties at McCarren Pool return next weekend and just like last summer, this year’s events looks to have already booked up all your Sundays for the rest of the summer. Presented once again by the fine people over at JellyNYC, this year’s lineup is already filled with an eclectic and exciting roster of musical talents beginning next Sunday (June 24th!) with Superchunk and Oakley Hall and continuing on with highlights from Man Man, TV on the Radio, Ted Leo and others.
