On the suggestion of a good friend, I headed out to NYC’s Mercury Lounge the other night to check out an Atlanta band by the name of Dead Confederate who’ve been gaining some positive attention recently. While I’m a firm believer in the fact that hype doesn’t necessarily equal good, I had a feeling from the get go that I wouldn’t be let down as the band are the newest discovery of one Gary Gersh (the man responsible for the signing of both Nirvana and Sonic Youth).

The Gaslight Anthem performed at Rutgers in their hometown of New Brunswick this past weekend. Let Me Run and The King Left opened. Unfortunately, Polar Bear Club’s van broke down and they canceled last minute.
Gaslight’s set was full of interesting tales of fortune tellers from Australia during an hour and half long set of damn good rock and roll. Check out some photos below.

The Faint got Philadelphia so sexually-pent up last Sunday night at the Trocadero. I think it might have been an full-out orgy.
As several contributors to this site can attest to, if there’s a dance party to be had within a 30 mile radius of Philly, chances are I’m there. Hence when The Faint announced a tour with the new Blood Brothers/Pretty Girls Make Graves hybrid outfit Jaguar Love, tickets were in my hand almost immediately. Ah, Lollapalooza. The name conjures up a different time in music, when super bands reigned and moustaches weren’t ironic. Overall, the experience was overwhelmingly positive. There were a few snafus that anyone could expect when servicing a crowd of 100,000 or more. There were enough bathrooms, lines weren’t too long, the park was beautiful, the crowd was generally friendly, food and beverages were reasonably priced and the lineup was incredible and evenly paced. Huzzah, Perry Farrell and Co.! Read after the jump for the quick n’ dirty rundown of Day 1.

Black Lips – All photos by Bill Shouldis
The Black Lips are a circus on stage by themselves, but add King Khan & The Shrines and Deerhunter to the mix and you’re going to going to have pure mayhem. Sunday’s show at McCarren Pool was just that. It was hard to find a focal point most of the time. TP was flying while an old dude were skating on stage. Pillows were being ripped apart while flowers were placed in butt cheeks and spit was being swapped. When can you say you saw all that at a show? Some dumbasses have been asking where rock ‘n’ roll has gone? Well, maybe if you listened to all these bands more, you’d realize it hasn’t gone anywhere. Viva The Black Lips!
