The New Sigur Ros Video Is Too Scandalous For Youtube?

While studying in Rome for the summer, I’ve taken to watching German MTV in my down time, for two reasons: one, the German language is hilarious to listen to, and two, unlike their sister station in the States, they actually play music.  While a good portion of it is ridiculous European pop, there’s enough decent stuff to warrant a viewing.  The other day, the video for the new Sigur Ros single “Gobbledigook” came on.  I hadn’t seen it before, and it quickly became apparent that the entire video was people of both sexes, frolicking nude in the woods.

Now, I’m no prude, but I come from the country of that birthed the infamous Superbowl “Boobgate,” and was at first genuinely shocked that this video would get played on television at 5 o’clock in the evening.  The video itself is completely innocent and non-sexual in nature – an artistic statement.  I was intrigued, and headed over to Youtube to post it on this site.  Apparently, however, Youtube has been consistently removing postings of the video from the site, citing violations of it’s content policy.  Sigur Ros’s official video on the site is only still from the shoot.

To me, this raises an interesting debate – why can European television air non-sexual nudity like it ain’t no thang, yet the same content is deemed too “hot” even for American internet?  To judge for yourself, head over to Sigur Ros’s website to view the video in full, and also get a free MP3 of “Gobbledigook” (which is fantastic, even without the nudity).

Sigur Rós Announce Video Contest

Posted on November 20th, 2007 by Jason

I hear Iceland is gorgeous this time of the year. Or maybe it’s gorgeous all year round. Either way, the linguistic expermintalists of Sigur Rós want you to experience their homeland to the fullest extent on their newest DVD Heima, which hits shelves today. The film focuses on the group’s return to Iceland after a year of intense touring and features the band playing in unique and gorgeous scenery throughout the country. So where do you come in, you ask? Apparently the band left some footage on the cutting room floor and they want you, yes you, to create your own “mini-documentary” with the footage. The band has full details and the footage up on the contest site, so crack open iMovie and get clicking away!
