Interview With Geoff Rickly From Thursday: Part Two

Our writer Leah interviewed Thursday lead singer Geoff Rickly last year before the band’s show at the TLA in Philadelphia. Since that interview, there has been plenty of activity in the band’s camp. They announced a split EP with Japanese hardcore heroes Envy, due out this fall on Temporary Residence. The band played a triumphant show with Hot Water Music and Paint It Black at NYC’s Terminal 5 in July. Now, plans for a new full-length have taken form, with a tentative release date set for early 2009. I caught up with Geoff on the phone a few weeks ago to talk about all the band’s upcoming plans for the next few months.

One of my favorite moments involving Thursday was when you guys played Long Island during Warped Tour 2006. The infamous scene where you broke your nose after you swung the mic and hit yourself in the face. It was one of the most incredible performances I’d ever seen, especially at Warped Tour, because everything is so sterile and tame there and here you were gushing blood on everybody.

Geoff: It was a telling thing for me. Through the pain [and] the questions that went through my head, all these little things happened that day that made me wonder about how our little world works. One of them was half way through the next song. The security guards came to our tour manager and said, ‘you tell him not to jump down into the crowd because we don’t want any faggot blood on us. We don’t need to get AIDS working on this job.’ Which I thought was such an insane thing to say. The other was, we sold more than twice the amount of merch that day then we had the rest of the tour. We sold almost $20,000 in merch that day. Kids are drawn to that thing I guess. It was like, ‘blood will make kids buy t-shirts. No wonder goth bands do so well.’ You play the same set every day on Warped Tour. You have a half an hour, so you put the songs that are fire crackers back to back and that’s it. Some days, I will be on stage and I’ll lose myself in repetitive motion. It really had this startling effect. [It reminded] me that I’m actually alive on stage and these people actually care what I’m saying. It was one of the best shows.

Thursday‘s show with Hot Water Music and Paint It Black on Saturday was the band’s first official gig in NYC in nearly two years. You could tell it had been a while because as soon as the lights dimmed and the band walked on stage, a ton of kids starting going bonkers. They even debuted a new song from their upcoming split release with Envy. Check out more photos after the jump.

Thursday’s Geoff Rickly Talks About Hot Water Music

Posted on July 11th, 2008 by Matthew

As we said below, Thursday is playing a huge show with Hot Water Music and Paint It Black at Terminal 5 in NYC this weekend. Along with all the excitement that comes with HWM’s return to the Big Apple, It’s also Thursday first official show in the city in nearly two years.

We talked to Geoff a few months ago, but I had a chance to talk with him recently about the show, the infamous Warped Tour 2006 incident in Long Island, and the new full-length. Stay tuned for all of that and the rest of my interview with Geoff on Monday. For now, read about his thoughts on the show this weekend.

Do you feel like this show is sort of your NYC comeback?

Geoff: It’s more about Hot Water Music playing. I love that band. Our first demo, we axed a song because the beginning of it was Blacktop Cadence and the end was Hot Water Music. We were like, ‘we can’t do this. This is too fucked up.’ It’s one thing to wear your influences on your sleeve. It’s another to take somebody’s song and pass it off as your own. [Laughing] This weekend, it doesn’t feel like [it's] about Thursday to me. [Hot Water Music is] back and I’m stoked about them playing again.

Hot Water Music, Alkaline Trio, The Breeders, Dillinger Four!? What Are YOU Doing This Weekend?

Posted on July 11th, 2008 by late night wallflower

Why did everyone and their mother book an awesome show this weekend? Let’s rattle them off.

The almighty Hot Water Music return to NYC. The lineup includes Thursday and Late Night Wallflower favorites Paint It Black. The show goes down at the huge, 3,000 cap. Terminal 5.

Alkaline Trio and American Steel are playing a sold out show at Irving Plaza the same night. I don’t know about you, but having the Trio and HWM in town on the same night but on different bills just feels wrong to me.

The F Yeah Fest makes two stops in town this weekend. The Circle Jerks, Dillinger Four, Matt and Kim, Team Robespierre will play Saturday in Manhattan at Highline Ballroom and Sunday at Club Exit in Brooklyn.

Trash Talk will be at Fortress Of Solitude on Saturday.

Matt and Kim will also be playing with a 22 piece orchestra on Sunday at McCarren Pool with The Breeders.

Am I forgetting anything else?
